Back Pain and Blogging: 8 Things About Me

Peanut butter & chocolate may be the two great tastes that go together (although I could make a very compelling argument for whiskey and pizza), but blogging and back pain are their mortal enemies. I’m not going to bore you with the pain, instead I’m going to practice a bit of meditative blogging…yep, that’s right, I’m now establishing “meditative blogging”. It was made a bit easier when Bryan Person tagged me in the 8 things you don’t know about me meme.

I thought I would actually use this to have a bit of fun…one of these revelations is false, use the comments to guess which one.

1. Shortly after college I met my wife and the moment I saw her it was a completely cheesy, time-slowing, hair swooshing, breezes breezing moment. The problem, I had to basically stalk her for three years before she would go out with me, so obviously she did not share that similar ‘frozen-in-time’ moment…but in the end all things work out.

2. Throughout my years in grade school and high school I was very active in the theater, specifically in musicals. Fortunately this is well before the advent of digital photos and certainly decades before YouTube. Some of the shows and roles:

Lancelot in Camelot
Harry McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie
Jacob in Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

3. Keeping on that path, I was also elected to the all-state choir three years in a row…as a soprano. For any of you who have met me, I certainly do not have the, um, body structure of a soprano. I still have the record they gave to each participant (yes, I said record) which included such timely hits as “Ezekial Saw the Wheel”, “Under the Boardwalk” and “Shake the Papya Down“.

4. I once worked in Manchester, NH as the PR Manager for a company called Silknet (those in that area will now know it from the neon sign on top of the mill that says KANA). My second week on the job my boss told me that the company would be hosting then Vice President Al Gore in a ‘town hall’ Q&A session with our employees as part of the 2000 Presidential Election. At the time we were about two weeks from the NH Primary so there was obviously a lot going on in that area. In my second week on the job we were able to get a mention of the company in Time Magazine, a first for me.

5. When I was eight both of my parents decided it would be a good idea to get me some lessons on a musical instrument, a way to channel the energy of an 8 year old boy. They chose the clarinet….yeah…that was fun.

6. We named our son Conor after the character Conor Larkin in Leon Uris’ Trinity, which I read every year.

7. My first trip abroad was 2001 when my wife (then girlfriend) traveled to Italy, France and Spain. On the flight over I had an engagement ring sewn into my right front pants pocket, with the plan to propose to Regan. My original plan was to actually wait a few days and propose in Portofino and not in Rome. However my plans changed when, for some reason, I kept getting horribly nervous that I was going to set off the metal detector’s. The airport was fine and I thought I had gotten past my trouble, until I walked into the entrance of the Vatican. I ended up proposing that night in Rome as we were waiting for our bus back to the hotel after an amazing dinner. Again, it all works out in the end.

8. Other books I try to read every year: the full Chronicles of Narnia and Tom Robbins’ Still Life with Woodpecker.

OK folks, I’m going to tag a few folks outside of the blogging community actually. I’m not asking them to post eight things…just one. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Utterz, whatever you wish. Those people are @carolehutch, @lizzer, @lisaa123 and @leslie1120…my original Twitter buddies.

Now, let’s see if I can stand up.

Loved these! Now I’m just waiting on seeing photos of you in the choir with a mullet :)

Thanks for tagging me. I’ll have to think about it and will post something soon via Twitter and Facebook.

  2. Regan Says:

Lovely trip down memory lane! :)

  3. Shannon Says:

Best blog around! Always fun to read! Miss working with you and Horn.

  4. Paull Young Says:

Wow, this is madness but I was very nearly named Connor - for the very same reason. No joke!

Mum loved Trinity, Connor appealed to her more than Seamus (understandably) in they end they settled on the double L route.

It’s a great read, you’ve just reminded me I need to re-read, it’s been years.

  5. Jim Eastman Says:

Glad to see their are more fans of combining whisky and pizza out there! Most people kind of look at me funny when I tell them that. Granted, most people kind of look at me funny anyways.
