Social Media, An Agent for Change
Some folks aren’t working today, and they have reminded me of that fact throughout the day. Those of us who are cried in joy at the lack of traffic. There is an obvious reason for all of this, so make sure you take a moment to thank a veteran in your life. I’m reminded of the sacrifice of our armed forces each and every day as I look at the pictures of my cousins (both Army) sitting on my desk. I could not be more proud of the sacrifices they made and make each day; thanks to my cousin Joe, thanks to my Uncle Stephen, thanks to my Grandpa Pat who shared letters, stories and pictures of his time in WWII, and thank you to the countless folks I don’t know personally but am grateful for each day. How cool that I can use a platform like my blog to reach out to these people!
I started thinking about all of this last week reading Bryan Person’s account of staying in touch with his Dad overseas. Bryan included the great work that ooVoo is doing donating webcams to the U.S.A.F.
Social media can be a powerful agent for change; economically and socially. The power to make an individual difference has been expanded ten-fold when you realize you can easily tap a network of networks. As long as your message is true and your cause good the power of social media can be used to help you reach your goals.
Another fine example is the Twitter I just saw from Amanda Gravel. Amanda is helping to raise some cash for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Amanda is a social media superstar and used her trusted network to spread the word; from Twitter, blogging, video and I’m sure more. This is a cause very close to my heart (yeah Mom!!!) so here is the video:
And here is how to Chip In if you so desire:

Kyle, thank you so much for your contribution and for your support on Engage in PR. the ChipIn ticker is off (*shakes fist at technology*)– with my ChipIn and non-ChipIn fundraising, I’ve raised $955 in the past 24 hours. I’m beside myself right now.
The power of social media and FRIENDS is absolutely amazing. I never expected such open and eager generosity when I put my cause up on Twitter and Social Honeycomb. I am so proud to be a part of this event and I am truly grateful to you and everyone else who has become a part of it with me.
